MIFF day 4

A still from The Cat and Claudia

Blew off two sessions I'd planned to see today as I had too much work to do, so only ended up seeing one session on Saturday...

Accelerator Shorts Program #1

MIFF says: "In its third year, the Accelerator programme brings together some of the hottest new filmmaking talent from Australia and New Zealand. Comprising of presentations, workshops, meetings and screenings, Accelerator is a fast-track for invited filmmakers to develop their skills, craft and industry contacts on an international level."

I say: An excellent collection of short narrative films in this package, covering a range of styles, from powerful drama to dramatic comedy. Highlights were the tense roadside drama Checkpoint (dir. Ben Phelps 2006), which made excellent use of a simple location, editing and sound to unsettle the audience; The Cat and Claudia (dir Lily Coates 2005), which gave a new twist to a ghost story; and Sexy Thing (Denie Pentecost), an ambitious story about an important issue that was told with visual flair and excellent performance.

Filmmaker Lily Coates will introduce The Cat and Claudia on Friday 4 August, 7pm at Greater Union.
